Understanding the Different Types of Workers' Compensation Benefits
In Michigan, there are basically three types of workers' compensation benefits that injured employees are entitled to under the Act, including:
- Wage loss- compensation for workers who are injured on the job and unable to return to work; weekly wage loss benefits may continue for as long as the work-related disability or disease continues.
- Medical benefits- An injured worker is also entitled to reasonable medical care for work-related injuries or diseases, including compensation for emergency treatment, medical care, surgery, nursing care, physical therapy, diagnostics, mileage, prescriptions and more.
- Vocational rehabilitation- compensates workers who are disabled to the point where they cannot return to their job; covers re-training and education that may be necessary to start a new career.
The injured worker must be able to show the magistrate that his or her injuries were either caused or significantly aggravated by his or her work activities or injuries. The injured worker then must prove to the magistrate that his or her work-related condition results in a disability as defined by the Workers' Compensation Disability Act.
